Distinguishing product documents, inspection reports and test reports

These documents answer different questions. Possessing one does not mean another activity has occurred or suitability is established for every use.

What does a product document describe?

A manufacturer data sheet or product certificate relates to a defined product and scope. Review model, part or batch references and the issuing organisation.

Inspection and testing are different activities

Condition inspection and a defined test method may produce different deliverables. Specify the activity, method, scope, reference and report at quotation.

Link documents to delivered items

Mismatched identification leaves document scope unclear. Request clarification rather than treating another product’s report as general evidence.

A short enquiry checklist

  • Document type
  • Product or batch identity
  • Issuer and scope
  • Required inspection or test

This guide supports technical communication. It is not site-specific selection, inspection or approval for use; follow relevant manufacturer instructions and competent assessment.
