Nominal diameter describes the ordered size; one arbitrary reading does not explain overall rope condition. Define the purpose and manufacturer method first.
Distinguish nominal size and field readings
Identifying a new product and inspecting a used rope are different tasks. Location, instrument and rope condition can affect readings. Acceptance limits must come from applicable product instructions and assessment criteria.
A useful record is more than one number
Recording where and under what conditions a measurement was made supports comparison. Keep nominal size, manufacturer information and earlier records together. Suspected wear or distortion requires separate assessment.
Prepare clear enquiry information
For procurement, provide nominal diameter with units, construction and existing label information. If submitting a field reading, identify it as a measurement rather than presenting it as nominal size.
A short enquiry checklist
- Nominal diameter and unit
- Purpose and location of measurement
- Method and instrument
- Applicable manufacturer document
This guide supports technical communication. It is not site-specific selection, inspection or approval for use; follow relevant manufacturer instructions and competent assessment.
